Wikipedia has a page in its wiki for almost every imaginable topic including best practices. Wikipedia tells us about a best practice, but it does not (nor is ever planned to) provide specific steps (or "rules of thumb") involved to follow a best practice.

For instance, IBM's Best Practices lists recommendations for software development, which their products support, as (1) Develop iteratively (2) Manage requirements (3) Use components (4) Model visually (5) Verify quality and (6) Control changes. Beyond a few descriptive phrases, the page fails to detail much in particular about any of these recommended practices.

Best Practices Wiki' primary goals are to
  • support a community of persons and organizations interested in formulating & sharing best practices, for example, via boards & blogs
  • create a public database of best practice methods, articles, case studies and resources searchable by subject, industry, job title and other methods
  • enable comparisons of best practices to include identifying common "rules of thumb", success & usage metrics
  • connect experts with organizations who want assistance customizing a best practice to their own needs
Best Practices Wiki' success is gauged by
  • the vibrancy of this community's contributions to and use of best practice methods, articles, case studies and resources
  • the depth & breadth of best practice methods, articles, case studies and resources cataloged by subject, industry, job title and other indexes
  • statistical validity for data about practitioners of specific best practice methods
  • multi-lingual translations of best practice methods, articles, case studies and resources
