To start, grow and survive, an organization needs leadership that has passion and motivation, which invigorates and sustains. It is key to overcoming many challenges, such as: (1) Tough times and crises; (2) Stiff and new competition; (3) Growth pains that require significant organizational and personnel changes; and (4) Unanticipated challenges that stress the organization and staff.

Employees are infected by the energy of the leaders. If that energy is positive with passion this will impact the employees. If that energy is negative or lack luster this will color the atmosphere of the organization.

Terry Gardiner is the founder and President of Silver Lining Seafoods and NorQuest Seafoods - a medium-size Alaska seafood processing company; and currently a Board member of the Anvil Corporation, an employee-owned company specializing in oil and gas engineering.

His co-operative experiences include member director of the Commercial Fishermen Co-operative association; creation of legislation for the Alaska Commercial Fishing and Agriculture Bank; and advisor to the US Dept of Health and Social Services for the state Health CO-OPs.
